2011 CS Irwin COSMIC Rando Race

The first race of the Colorado Ski Mountaineer Cup season is in the books.  And what a race!  Different from last year being a full on powder day with a January like snowpack and 2 feet of fresh powder, this time the athletes were greeted by thin conditions and October like weather.  But, as race organizer said, “it’s a ski mountaineering race” and part of the attraction is dealing with conditions presented to you.  Safety and preparedness are the emphasis.  But tell that to the top end of the field.  The seasons leading up to now have initiated a strong and elite field of men and women racers that all know how to go fast, take chances and have fun!  Please visit the COSMIC sites to read more and look at results.

Full Lunar Eclipse – December 2011

Everything came together for me on Saturday morning.  The full moon would be eclipsed as it set in the pre dawn and sunrise hours of Saturday December 10th, 2011.  I did my homework by using the tools posted on the web and Facebook and went out for my own recon several times to figure out where the moon would set during the full lunar eclipse, a task far more difficult than it should be.  In the mountains; times, places and how they will line up can be tricky to nail but when you do this is what you get.  Congrats to the other Photog’s that got out and got this wild scene captured in their own ways!

Be sure to visit Smugmug for all of my moon shots

Crested Butte Ski Club graphics package

Crested Butte Photography and Graphic Design was hired by the CB Ski Club to develop a new logo and graphics package.  We started by discussing the goals and feel of the design and I went to work.  Given the long tradition of the Ski Club in the valley I tried for a design that combined an historic feel with a cutting edge look.  I also wanted to incorporate the distinctive profile of our home mountain, Mt. Crested Butte.  In the gallery you’ll be able to see just a fraction of the designs that were exchanged and redrawn from the constructive criticisms the design task force provided.  The result is something the Club can be proud of to call their own and use in all od their future fund raising efforts and events.

I want to thank the Crested Butte Ski Club and its effort to assist me in this process, it could not have gone any smoother.  Please contact CB Photo and Graphic Design with your needs.

Thanks for letting me participate, you guys and gals rock the bikes!  I threw in some very heavy effects on some of the images; in the originals the composition was there but unfortunately the focus was off.  Maybe you like the artwork, let me know.  k2

New Camera for CB Photo

I purchased a Sony NEX-5 for shooting on the run and to buy me some time to get my a700 serviced.  An unbelievably small package that will come in handy in many applications.  I recommend you check them out.  Here are the first images I took with the camera, the sunset and clouds are from Artwalk Evening on Thursday from the Rijks Family Gallery.

Early Morning in the mist

I love the opportunity to get up early and see the landscape wake up.  On Sunday I had that chance and was able to share it with another photographer that was experiencing Crested Butte for the first time.  We struck out at 5am to Gothic and Schofield Pass with clouds hanging thickly in the early pre-sunrise light.  As the light grew into shafts of color through the clouds and mist we made every attempt to shoot, talk and drive around to various spots in the East River Valley.

It was one of those mornings when the light was incredible but incredibly fleeting.  The fast clouds were opening and closing and sliding across the snowfields and ridge lines while we fiddled with lenses and photography talk.  Every time we turned around the light was getting better and then gone.  It was fun and challenging at the same time.  No matter what the weather is, it is always rewarding to go out for a pre-sunrise adventure.

The variety of available subject matter is unlimited in Crested Butte and I’m always excited to share it.  Happy shooting Larry!

Marmot Grind – Arapaho Basin Cosmic

The Marmot Grind held at Arapaho Basin Ski Area is the last in a series of 9 Ski Mountaineering races held in Colorado this winter.  I want to say how great it was to follow the series and meet the racers along the way, thanks to everybody that included me and helped me out.  A special thanks to Pete Swenson and Bryan Wickenhauser for inspiring me and the masses to get out there and ski while you can, no matter what the conditions are!

Purple in June

If you read the Photo of the Weekly 7 you know about my attempt to ski every month of the year I turned 40. This is June, 2008. After a colossal snowfall the previous winter, we were set up to ski well into the summer and even fall, right up until it started snowing again. March, April and May were no brainers as the snowpack was still thick and rich. June presented a few more constraints.

Del Norte riding

Last spring I went on my first photography assignment for Mountain Flyer Magazine. After talking with Brian Riepe, the editor, and making many arrangements with my good friends who live in Del Norte, Colorado, I set off to shoot, ride and hang out in a very undiscovered part of the Rocky Mountains.
